Shropshire Conservative Councillors Vote to Ban Illegal Protests
We have all recently seen the damage to both livelihoods and property that
illegal protests across the UK have had, which is why at a recent full
council meeting, Shropshire Conservatives took the step to raise two
motions, i.e.:
1. To publicly condemn all illegal protests organised by Just Stop Oil or
similar groups.
2. To demand the permanent cessation of all illegal protests and request
that these groups work constructively with both local and national
government to achieve our mutually desired Net Zero Targets.
We are very disappointed to report that the Green Party voted against these
motions. The conclusion to draw is a concern that they support the
prevention of people going about their normal day to day lives. Just as
concerning was the Liberal Democrat and Labour groups who disbelievingly
abstained on the vote.
As a Party, Shrewsbury Conservatives encourage people to have their say.
When these protests border on illegal or dangerous actions, we feel however
that people and businesses need to be protected to help ensure that the
hard-working people of Shropshire are safeguarded. The damage to property we
have seen elsewhere in the country has also led us to these steps. At the
same time, we support the opening of constructive dialogue to achieve the
net zero and climate change goals we need to meet. The mentality of ‘those
who shout the loudest win, regardless of their support’ must stop.
